A few words from the photographer . . .
Photographer
My father was truly passionate about art and beauty. I can remember him excitedly describing the color variations in a sunset or the drama and intensity of a Van Gogh print. He could not pass an open art studio or museum. Though we were of modest means, I grew up with an expectation of art being a part of one’s, life like family, work or faith.

In 1967, I followed the songs to San Francisco and became good friends with Mike Roberts, who was photographing the Hippies. I, too, worked in black and white using a twin lens Mamiyaflex camera. My preference was for large images, 4 to 5 feet square.

I began my art in the west, photographing the ghost towns and desolate buildings of the Great American Desert. These efforts resulted in a one man show at Grace Cathedral as well as exhibitions in San Quentin and Soledad Prisons.

After hitchhiking across the country, I arrived in the Boston area to find myself drafted as a conscientious objector. There followed years of excess, efforts at making a living and little thought of returning to the west or of photography.

Fast forward many years to living in the Green Mountains, cleaned up, calmed down, and turning again to photography. My old camera had lost its familiarity after so many years of neglect. I found digital more comfortable and liberating. I also found myself attracted to color. Unfortunately, when I started shooting, it was all too obvious I had lost my eye for pictures.

I determined to learn again what had come to me so easily in my youth. The first year I didn’t take pictures, but looked for them. In the second, I allowed myself to take pictures only within walking distance of my village home. By the third year, I was shooting just barns. Gradually, I worked my way back to my art.

Water is the culmination of that journey. This body of work took three years to produce. It debuted as an exhibit in the dining room of the Daily Planet restaurant in Burlington, Vermont, April of 2009.

Available on this site are free photographs for downloading. These include pictures I’ve taken all over the world. You can also view the collection entitled Water.
